Casual racing games have their place, but Sparks – Episode 1 is simply too safe in its approach. Each of the album’s songs has no diversity or taste, making the entire thing seem as dry as a box of saltines.

With Sparks – Episode One, Trapezium Development Studio sends a message to the world’s driving simulators, describing the game as a “happy non-violent arcade racing game” (their words, not ours). Does this game have what it takes to stand out in a sea of casual racing games like Forza Horizon and Mario Kart?

No, in a nutshell.

Review of the first episode of Sparks

Rather of focusing on beefy-style automobiles with a plethora of configurations and color schemes, Sparks – Episode 1 simplifies everything. Players may pick from eight different automobiles, all of which have the identical handling characteristics, and players are not even given the option of customizing their paint schemes.

Players may then pick from three different circuits to compete on individually or as part of a cup. The Green Plane has green hills and sharp curves, the Snowy Mountains have bridges and steep terrain in the winter, and the Sky Curve has a Mario Kart Rainbow Road-style track held up by rockets well above the clouds.

The landscape makes no effect to the players, regardless of whatever option they pick. Regardless of whether one is driving on ice, grass, or even water, one’s speed will remain constant. The handling is also lacking, coming off as sloppy in comparison to Bandai Namco’s Ridge Racer series. With a touch of the Space button, players may instantaneously enter a drift, making things even more slick. In a nutshell, the controls and engine are unfit for the game.

The general visual style just exacerbates the situation. While the low poly aesthetic isn’t horrible in and of itself — Formula Retro Racing did a fantastic job with it But it lacks individuality. The development team is also big on bloom, with all of the songs having an excessive amount of saturation. Although one of the courses has some great fog effects, the game could have easily ran on the PlayStation 2 back in 2001.

The layout of the course isn’t much better. You know you’re in for a bland experience when the most exciting thing players come across is a little ramp. With a press of the “R” key, one may quickly return to the track, however we discovered that the lap count was messed up. When utilizing this feature, we also found the AI to be a little strange; there was one instance when we shot from eighth to second after pushing the key – it makes the game way too simple and seems to be broken.

Casual racing games have their place, but Sparks – Episode 1 is simply too safe in its approach. Each of the album’s songs has no diversity or taste, making the entire thing seem as dry as a box of saltines.

Everyone loves alpacas, and anybody who argues otherwise is probably devoid of a soul. With their new 3D game Alpaca Stacka, Sebastian Baracaldo, Michelle Ma, and Spookulele Games have paid respect to this one-of-a-kind mammal. Should gamers take control of this fluffy creature, who combines hide-and-seek action with a fairytale world?

Although keyboard warriors won’t be able to compete in the Olympics anytime soon, NowakGames’ retro-style sports game World CHAMPIONS: Decathlon will give our fingers a good workout. Should players hit the track (and field) with a lot of events awaiting them?
