You know you’re in a small town when there’s not even enough restaurants to list on the website and most of them are closed. Kansas is one such place, with only 31 restaurants listed within its city limits. It might be hard to believe, but this tiny community has more than 1 million residents! But what makes it so unique?

AUSTIN, Texas (KTRK) — Late in the game, everything seemed to be working against Kansas. The force of nature. The throng. The result.
Even the past.
Kansas stunned Texas 57-56 in overtime, snapping the Jayhawks’ eight-game losing streak this season and a 56-game losing streak in Big 12 road games dating back to 2008. Jalen Daniels hit fullback Jared Casey — a walk-on who hadn’t caught a pass this season — on a scrambling throw for a 2-point conversion.
“Coach Lance Leipold stated, “It really speaks a lot about the young guys we have in the locker room.” “They’ve been going hungry for a long time. It’s a one-win situation. It’s something we need to build on.”
At Caesars Sportsbook, Kansas was a 31-point underdog, making it the greatest spread upset in a Big 12 conference game history. The Jayhawks have never won a game against Texas in Austin until Saturday, going 0-9 in eight contests.

Texas is on a five-game losing streak, the longest in the previous 65 seasons and tied for the third-longest in school history. Casey Thompson of Texas has six touchdown passes, tying Colt McCoy for the most in a single game in school history. Prior to Saturday, Kansas had lost 18 consecutive conference games, tying for the most in the FBS. Prior to Saturday, Kansas had lost 21 consecutive games versus FBS opponents, the longest current run in the FBS. In the defeat, Texas scored 56 points, the most in school history. Kansas has scored 57 points on the road, the most in school history. Since the FBS/FCS split in 1978, Texas has been a 79-0 favorite of at least 24 points entering Saturday.
Leipold understood he had nothing to lose by attempting the convert. Have you ever lost a game? So, what’s the point? Leipold is attempting to repair the Big 12’s poorest program.
But if Kansas (2-8, 1-6 Big 12) can make it and upset Texas — even a failing Longhorns team that is on its worst losing skid in more than 60 years — it has a chance to shock college football.
After the Jayhawks almost let the game slip away, it worked perfectly.
Texas had come back from a 21-point deficit in the second half to force overtime with a touchdown throw from Casey Thompson to Cade Brewer with 22 seconds remaining.
In overtime, Texas grabbed the ball first and scored on a scoop-and-stretch touchdown reception by Marcus Washington. However, Kansas was given a short field due to an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, and the Jayhawks responded with Devin Neal’s 2-yard touchdown run.
Leipold made the option to go for the victory without hesitation. When Daniels saw Casey following the scrambling quarterback across the center of the field, Kansas players raced onto the field, and the fullback clutched the touchdown pass.
“I didn’t see the catch at all… But I saw everyone else coming toward them, so I followed suit and dove into the dogpile,” Neal said. “It was just incredible.”
The play was “a strange experience,” according to Casey, a freshman from Plainville, Kansas, who had never played offense for the Jayhawks until Saturday night.
“‘He’s got one of the team’s best hands,” Daniels added. “I’ve seen him make some incredible one-handed catches. He’ll be a ball player when it matters, whether he’s a walk-on or not.”

While Kansas’ players sprinted around the field, a frustrated Texas player sat near the goal line, pounding the ground with his helmet.
Texas (4-6, 2-5) began 4-1 under first-year coach Steve Sarkisian, but has already lost five straight games, the school’s worst losing run since 1956 and tied for third all-time. To be bowl eligible, Texas needs win their last two games.
Since 2016, Texas hasn’t missed a bowl game or had a losing season. Tom Herman, Sarkisian’s predecessor, never had a losing season in four years and won all four of his bowl games, but was dismissed nevertheless after failing to win the Big 12 championship.
“We’re going to be swimming upstream until we find out that it requires discipline, dedication, toughness, and responsibility all of the time,” Sarkisian added. “That’s the message I’m sending to the lads. They have to realize that at some time.”
When asked whether his players had given up on the season, Sarkisian said no.
“I’m not sure.” Sarkisian added, “You’d have to ask them.”
Daniels threw for 202 yards and three touchdowns while also scoring on the ground. For the Jayhawks, Neal carried for 143 yards and three touchdowns. Kansas had not scored more than 33 points all season until halftime, when they had 35. Four turnovers were forced by the defense.
For the Longhorns, Thompson ended with 358 yards throwing and six touchdowns.
