Jaguars HC Urban Meyer Needs To Thank a Former Software Engineer for Earning His First NFL Victory

The Jaguars are the NFL’s first team to win a game with an artificial intelligence-powered system.

Urban Meyer, the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars, is now 1-0. He has been in charge of the team since 2013 and was previously an Ohio State Buckeyes football coach.

On a last-second field goal against the Miami Dolphins in London, the Jacksonville Jaguars earned their first win under Urban Meyer as head coach. Trevor Lawrence finally proved why he was the top selection in the 2021 NFL Draft, and it was a chaotic finale for the foreign fans who packed the stadium once more.

The Jaguars’ win was not beautiful, but that’s beside the point. A victory is a win, as the cliché goes. Meyer likened it to a root canal later because it was so unsightly. While Lawrence and running back James Robinson did great, Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone should send a big thank you note to a former software engineer who credited him with his first NFL win.

Matthew Wright has gone from being a software engineer to becoming a Jaguars hero.

Wright, Matthew. Have you ever heard of the name before?

It’s OK; most hadn’t until the London surprise on Sunday. Wright was just promoted from the Jaguars’ practice squad, and he came through for them not once, but twice.

Lawrence stated after the game that Wright was a software engineer a month ago. Now, he is the Jaguars’ hero, and he is undoubtedly a big apple in Meyer and Lawrence’s eyes, since they whiffed on their first five tries in the 2021 season and were on the verge of making history.

K, said Trevor Lawrence. Matthew Wright told him a month ago that he was a software engineer, and now he’s making a game-winning field goal.

All of that may be put to rest now that the Jaguars have avoided losing their 21st straight game, which would have tied the NFL record.

The game ball was awarded to the quiet kicker.

Wright received the game ball after the win, because why not? First, he made an insane 54-yard field goal that looked good, looked terrible, and then swerved in at the last second like a vehicle changing lanes at the last second.

Minutes later, Wright stepped up and hit the game-winning field goal, sending the Jaguars bench and supporters into a frenzy in a packed London stadium. Meyer discussed Wright’s response to getting the game ball after the game (h/t Mia O’Brien).

“That may have been the most he’s ever spoken.”

After Matthew Wright got the game ball, Urban Meyer congratulated him.

The Jaguars’ kicker, who played college football at UCF, is now 25 years old. Wright has done nothing but make a strong case for the position while Josh Lambo’s future with the Jaguars is uncertain.

Wright is now 3-4 on the season and 6-7 on point-after-touchdowns. Lambo is 5-7 on PATs this season but has yet to hit a field goal, so Meyer and the Jags may stay with Wright moving forward.

The two sparred in practice all week, and Meyer’s choice to go with the ex-software engineer over the seasoned incumbent was the finest he’s made in Jacksonville.

For the time being, the Jags and Meyer may relax.

The Jaguars eventually got their first victory of the year in mid-October. Meyer earned his first NFL win, Lawrence got his, and the team as a whole won for the first time since September 2020. Even though they were playing the Dolphins on Sunday, things seemed to be looking up.

Jacksonville will have a bye week before playing the Seattle Seahawks, Buffalo Bills, and Indianapolis Colts in a tough three-game run, two of which will be on the road.

After a rough start to the season, this might be just what the club – and Meyer – needed to preserve his job, at least for now.

All of this is due to a software developer who left the company less than a month ago. You can’t make this stuff up, believe me.

Pro Football Reference provided the statistics.
